THE long summer evenings and very pleasant weather means a great opportunity to play a lot of golf on a stunning course at Wenvoe Castle.

An unusual challenge is the harder ground seeing the ball travelling much further but not always where intended.

Last Wednesday the Seniors Section held their regular stableford and Mike Froud’s score of 35 points was enough to finish just ahead of Scott Werner on count back.

Mike probably clinched his win with an exceptional eagle on the difficult 10th hole a hole much changed by the recent removal of a large tree guarding the approach over the pond.

The Saturday Stableford saw a huge entry and Gareth Vaughan took the honours with an excellent 40 points which included birdies on both the 10th and 11th holes.

Richard Bond had to settle for second place with 38 points just one point ahead of Shaun Tobin.

On Sunday was a medal competition played in very warm conditions which Stephen Bottomer clearly enjoyed in posting the winning score of net 69.

Count back had to be used and Roger Lane was unlucky to miss out and finished runner-up with his excellent net 69.

The cavalry was just behind with Jack Walsh, Daniel Udry and Andy Evans all posting sub-par rounds of net 70.

Earlier in the week Sheila Morrow and Dee Lloyd qualified at Swansea Bay Golf Club to represent Wenvoe Castle in the Australian Spoons Final to be held at Cottrell Park in September.

On Saturday the Ladies competed for the Margaret Moss Shield.

Jane Lott opened her scoring with a tremendous birdie on the long par 5 1st hole and this paved the way for her winning score of 36 points.

Karen Ball produced a solid round to end in second place with 35 points and Sheila Morrow was third with a steady 34 points.

On Sunday the Ladies took part in the Daily Mail Foursomes Qualifier and the team of Karen Ball and Sheila Davies combined well to win with 33 points.

Runners-up were Jane Lott and Lyn Williams with 29 points.

Karen and Sheila will represent Wenvoe Castle in the finals to be held next year.

The members and visitors appreciate the considerable skill and effort by the green staff to maintain the course in such superb condition given the ongoing very dry weather conditions.

This has been a major factor in attracting excellent reviews of the course and has contributed significantly to the increasing membership together with more and more visitors and societies enjoying the beautiful surroundings and excellent facilities.

The club welcomes new members of all ages and abilities and details on a variety of memberships can be found on the club website wenvoecastlegolfclub.co.uk or why not call the club secretary Nicola Manning on 02920 594371 who will be delighted to provide details and answer any enquiries.
