ON a fine sunny day, Sully Sports Bowls Club brought their season to an end last Sunday, 15th Sept when they held their “Finals Day,” and the contestants served up a feast, with bowling of the highest calibre.

The Pairs Final opened proceedings as Ken Agius & Gerry Currie took on Les Adams & Dennis Austin, and although the latter won the 1st end, they disastrously then lost the next 7 ends, from which they never recovered.

All four players bowled well at times, but it was Currie’s, playing lead, nagging accuracy that won the game, putting so much pressure on Adams & Austin, that inevitably gave his skip Agius a reasonably easy ride, to a 22-11 victory after 20 ends.

Ken Agius was immediately back on the green to face Charles Coomber in the Handicap Final, which turned out to be a classic.

Both were on top form and the lead changed hands six times by the 13th end, where they were then tied at 12-12.

A two for Coomber on the 14th gave him back the lead, but great bowling by Agius saw him take the next 5 ends to lead 19-14, and put him on the verge of victory, but superb pressure bowling from Coomber won him the next 4 ends and victory by 21-19.

Last year’s Club Champion, Lee Romans, took on Club Captain Graham Brown, in the 2 Woods Final. After 11 very closely, skilfully fought ends, Romans stood a shot down at 6-7, at which point Brown took complete charge winning the following 6 ends to clinch a 17-6 victory.

After a break for refreshments, and to cool down from the relentless hot sun, the Charles Coomber and Lee Romans contested the Championship Final, and despite what appeared to be an easy win on the scorecard, this did not reflect the quality, and competitiveness, of both bowlers.

They shared the 1st 4 ends, at 3 apiece, at which point Coomber bowled some of his best woods of the season to take 5 of the next 6 ends, scoring 14 shots to 1, and putting himself within touching distance of victory.

Romans fought valiantly to the end, but 7 ends later Coomber clinched the Championship 21-10.

The club holds its AGM at 7pm on Monday, 23rd September 2019, with the annual dinner wrapping up the 2019 season’s activities, on the following on Friday, 27th September 2019 – 7pm for 7:30pm.
