TOP scorer Padraig Amond believes the fans inspired Newport County AFC to beat Scunthorpe United on Saturday and he wants the Rodney Parade faithful to cheer them on to victory again tomorrow night.

Amond and Josh Sheehan scored the goals to beat Scunthorpe in front of 3,768 home supporters at the weekend.

And Amond is hoping that the backing of another big crowd this evening can help them to another home win against Crawley Town on Tuesday.

The striker told iFollowExiles: “It’s important that we have a really good turnout again because the difference the fans make is massive.

“The noise they made after the second goal [on Saturday] spurred us on and helped us get the victory.”

Amond’s sixth goal of the season was cancelled out by a Mark O’Brien own goal to draw Scunthorpe level before Sheehan secured the points with a stunning winner.

“The reaction to their goal just after half time was important,” said the striker.

“We know how important it is to react against that and not get too disappointed and the reaction from all the lads when they scored was brilliant.”

The win saw County climb back up to third in the table, three points behind leaders Crewe Alexandra with a game in hand after last week’s trip to Cheltenham Town was postponed due to international call-ups.

“It’s an important three points for us,” added Amond. “Not having a game last weekend made it important that we hit the ground running [again].

“The results have put us into third with a game in hand so we’re in a really good position.

“It was important that we got a result, being at home as well was important because we’ve made this a fortress recently and we needed to keep that momentum going.”

South Wales Argus:

The Exiles are unbeaten at home in League Two since February, but Amond knows that 13th-placed Crawley should not be underestimated.

“It’s a good test for us again,” said the Irishman. “Every game in this league is tough, regardless of whether you’re playing first in the league or 24th in the league – it’s always going to be a tough game.

“It’s just about trying to put a string of wins together and try to keep the run going.

“That’s what we’ve done since losing at Northampton, we’ve started a mini-run again and hopefully it’ll keep going for a long time.”

Michael Flynn’s men drew at Macclesfield Town and at home to Exeter City following the defeat at Northampton Town on September 14.

And they have since won three in a row in the league – at Swindon Town and at home to Carlisle United and Scunthorpe.

Crawley lost at Bradford City on Saturday but they beat Colchester United the week before and recently knocked out Championship Stoke City after a penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup.

“Both of us will fancy ourselves going into the game,” said Amond. “Winning breeds confidence and them winning in the Carabao Cup games will give them a lot of confidence.

“They have a massive opportunity the following week [at home to Colchester] to get into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup so hopefully they’ll have one eye on that.

“We can’t think like that, we’ll be preparing to face the best Crawley team we can, and we’ll be expecting a tough game. Hopefully we get a win to keep us going."
