BARRY Leisure Centre-based Vale Karate were the most successful club as they finished at the top of the medal table at the inaugural Karate Wales ‘Closed’ Championships held in Penarth on Sunday.

Vale Karate started the day with a bang as they won their first medals of the day in the new categories for very young children the 4-6 Years Kata events.

The gold medalists in both the Boys and Girls sections were Vale Karate trainees and graduates from their very successful ‘Tigers’ classes, with Kiri Wisdom winning the Girls event and Elias Deere taking the Boys gold medal.

In fact all 4 medalists in the Boys section were from Vale Karate with Cobey Xie, Elijah Watkins and Elliot Macleod taking the Silver, and bronzes respectively, with Ruby Carmichael taking a Girls bronze medal.

Vale continued to have success across the board throughout the event, and in fact two of the club's youngsters, 13 year old Greg James and Mayzi Lee, 8, won the elusive ‘double’ taking both Kata and Kumite titles.

No less than 38 medals were won by Vale Karate with 15 new Karate Wales champions, another 15 silver medalists and eight bronze medals won.

The club’s squad will now focus on the next event in the competition calendar, the finale to this season’s Welsh Karate League, which takes place in Merthyr on March 15th.
