TOP scorer Padraig Amond insists Newport County AFC are better than recent results suggest and he’s adamant that they won’t let the season “fizzle out” over the next few weeks.

County would have climbed to 10th in the League Two table with a win at Grimsby Town on Tuesday night but the 4-2 defeat, a third loss in the last five league games, saw them slip back down to 16th – 12 points below the play-off places.

Michael Flynn’s men, who beat Bradford City last weekend, still have two games in hand on many of the teams above them but Amond knows that they need to start wining quickly to keep the season alive.

Speaking after the defeat at Blundell Park, the 32-year-old said: “We’re very disappointed after getting a good result last Saturday.

“We had high hopes after the weekend and we felt like we’d turned the corner after beating Bradford.

“We got back into the game and had chances but we went way from what we’re good at in the last 20 minutes.

“It wasn’t like us. It was a very untypical defensive performance, conceding the goals we did.”

South Wales Argus:

The Exiles go to Oldham Athletic tomorrow looking to record their first away win since the 2-1 victory at Scunthorpe United on January 11.

“There’s nothing we can do about it now,” said Amond.

“It’s about moving on as quickly as possible, looking ahead to the weekend and trying to get three points at Oldham.

“We’ve got 13 games left now and it’s important that we don’t let the season fizzle out,” he added.

“Regardless of whether you’re contracted [for next season], out of contract [in the summer] or on loan, everyone is playing for places and to make sure they’re in the manager’s plans.

“It’s just from game to game now. It’s just a case of everyone making sure they do everything they can and do the best they can do for the club.”

Matching last season’s late charge towards the play-offs may be beyond County this year, but Amond is not ready to give up the fight.

“We want to get back on track quickly because we’re better than what we’re showing at the minute,” said the Irishman.

“We shouldn’t be where we are in the table. But we can’t keep mentioning the games in hand because you have to win your games in hand.

“It’s all very well saying we’ve got two games in hand on those above us, but there’s no point unless you win those games in hand.

“It’s important that we get back on track this weekend.”
