SULLY Sports Bowls Club played a double header last week, entertaining Millwood on Wednesday, 2nd September, and visiting Millwood on Saturday, 5th September, and as of all this seasons’ matches, they were played in the best of spirit and humour.

Hosting on the Wednesday, the match format was four rinks of triples, playing two woods over 18 ends.

Both teams won two rinks each, with the Sports edging the aggregate.

K Aguis’ rink raced into a 9-1 lead after only four ends, when the visitors got some feel for the green, and gained some parity, but parity was not enough to claw back the deficit, and the home trio won 19-10.

L Roman’s rink won eight ends to Millwoods’ ten, but a 5 shot win on the 7th end, when they were trailing by 3 shots, followed by another 5 on the ninth end, gave them the lead, which they defended to the end, to clinch an 18-15 rink victory.

K Romans’ rink won the first two ends, only to lose the next six ends to trail by 9 shots.

Although they then found some form to win seven of the remaining ten ends, they failed to close the gap and were beaten 12-15, in the closest fought rink of the day.

It was nip and tuck in the early stages on C Coomber’s rink, but Millwood turned a 2 shot deficit into a 5 shot advantage in the middle ends, and held on in the final ends to win 17-12.

Rink Scores:

A Collard, P Holland, K Aguis 19-10;

B Powell, R Gallivan, L Romans 18-15;

J Pearce, A Fitt, C Coomber 12-17;

J Harries, L Adams, K Romans 12-15.

The return fixture on Saturday, was played with a format of five rinks of triples, playing three woods over 21 ends. Overall the Sports took better to Millwood’s fine green, and won four of the five rinks, and a comfortable aggregate win.

K Aguis’ rink was behind after the first six ends, then led for the next six, only for the home rink to lead over the next six. The Sports down a shot with four ends left, found a touch of magic, to win them all and clinch a narrow, well contested rink by 19-16.

L Roman’s rink won the opening four ends, and by the twelfth had a 6 shot lead, and appeared to be coasting to victory.

The home trio fought back to take the lead by a shot with 4 ends remaining, and a single to each side in the next two ends, gave them the edge, but on the penultimate end the Sports scored a 2 to retake the lead by a shot.

The final end was dramatic as both sides thought they had won the end, and the game, but after several minutes of measuring, and re-measuring, the end went to the visitors for a 16-14 win.

K Romans’ rink got off to a flyer winning 4 of the opening 6 six ends, bowled superbly throughout the rest of the match, at one point winning 7 ends on the trot, to negate any potential fightback by the home trio, and run out comfortably 27-8 winners.

A Collard’s rink were a shot up after 6 ends, but then the Millwood trio took charge finding great form, and eased to a well-earned 22-14 win.

C Coomber’s rink won the opening 4 ends, never lost the lead, restricting the home trio to wins on only 7 ends, and marched on to a fine 21-14 victory.

Rink Scores:

P Collier, L Adams, K Aguis 19-16;

J Harries, R Gallivan, L Romans 16-14;

J Pearce, A Fitt, C Coomber 21-14;

M Stafford, R Giddings, K Romans 27-08;

D Burbridge, D Austin, A Collard 14-22.
