Penarth Town AFC got their season off to an unlucky start, losing 1-0 to St Athan.
The latter, reigning league champions, secured the win with a free kick in the second half after the referee blew the whistle for handball.
Despite Penarth's dominating performance, they missed four opportunities, with attempts by players David Shallis and Paul Beedell.
A close call saw St Athan's header from a corner hitting the bar and almost securing a goal, but Penarth's goalkeeper, Michael Winton, expertly saved it.
Unfortunately, the handball call against Penarth's captain, Callum Eva, led to St Athan's solitary goal.
Penarth's Samuel White won a penalty soon after, but Rhys Fford's shot was saved by St Athan's keeper.
Despite the scoreline, Penarth showed tenacity throughout the match.
They will next face Cardiff Airport Reserves on August 24 at Ceri Road, Rhoose.
The team's sponsors for the season are Qcare Penarth, Cabs64, and S&L Electrical.
