Penarth RFC’s return to action, following a month’s lay-off during the autumn internationals, has been naturally overshadowed by Monday morning’s fire at the Athletic Club.
This destroyed the main bar and ancillary buildings, but was stopped short of the Memorial Stand and the Long Room by the early intervention of local emergency services.
Messages of sympathy and offers of help have flooded in from the Welsh rugby community and planning for the reconstruction will already be underway.
This Saturday’s match for the Seasiders is not a league fixture, but a cup tie at home to Division 1 West Lampeter Town. The game will go ahead on Saturday, but since the Athletic Field is effectively out of action until things are sorted out, the venue is now arranged for Cardiff Arms Park with a 5.30pm kick-off!
The Ceredigion side have reached the third round by way of a first round bye and a 34-12 home win against Div 1 North Llangefni. Llambed themselves have not been having the best of seasons in Div 1 West, but have won two out of seven games and are sitting just above the relegation zone.
With two league fixtures against bottom club Rhydyfelin and sixth-placed Abercynon to follow the cup-tie before Christmas, the Seasiders will be hoping to get back to full strength in order to consolidate their position in the leading group. This is important, as there are two Div 1 East Central fixtures unaffected by cup commitments this weekend and St.Albans’ away match at Abercwmboi gives them the opportunity to go top of the table.
The New Year opens with a home fixture against neighbours Barry, then an away trip to East Cardiff to face our old friends The ‘Buns. Penarth have already beaten both clubs this season.
WRU Division 1 Cup third round: Saturday, December 6, 2025, Penarth v Lampeter Town, Cardiff Arms Park, Westgate St, Cardiff CF10 1JA.
Kick-off 5.30pm.
