Having got as far as the beginning of November without a single postponement, Penarth RFC have now managed to run up three in a row, with a fourth to follow at the end of January.
First to go was a visit to Llanishen when the home cup tie against Lampeter Town (subsequently played at Cardiff Arms Park, with the Seasiders winning 52-33). Now, both pre-Christmas fixtures (away at Rhydyfelin and at home to Abercynon) have been put back into the New Year.
This will leave Penarth without a league game until Saturday, January 3, almost two months since the 29-29 home draw against Llanharan. This opening New Year fixture is ‘at home’ against Barry, venue to be advised. The clubs last met at the Reservoir Field back in September, when the Seasiders ran out 41-14 winners, with tries by Osian Coates (2), Luc Keane-Adams, Owen Lloyd, Tom Griffiths and Will Odgers.
Despite having no opportunity to consolidate their position, Penarth were still leading the division right up until last Saturday, when second-placed St. Albans finally squeezed past with a 19-14 win against Llanishen. Llanharan and Llanishen remain within a bonus-point win behind the Seasiders.
Clearly the season will now be extended beyond the end of February and there might be a late race for the title and promotion between the current top five clubs.
Having progressed to the cup quarter finals, Penarth face a trip west to Port Talbot to play Aberavon Green Stars of Division 1 West Central.
