Alexander 'Sandy' Graveson, 13, produced the bowling performance of the season to send Penarth's 1st XI into the semi-finals of the Welsh Cup, taking 6 for 23 as Northop Hall CC were beaten by 16 runs at the Main Square on Sunday.
Adeeb Ilyas (52) and Vinayak Vijay (56) had earlier set up the total with a second-wicket stand worth 71, taking Penarth to 162 for 7, before Graveson ran through the Northop Hall order — three maidens in his eight overs — to bowl them out for 146 and book a quarter-final upset.

There was a fine story at the 5ths level also. Clive Morton and George Prickett shared an unbroken century opening stand as the 5th XI beat Monmouth CC's 3rd XI by 10 wickets away at Cheltenham Fields. George Prickett made 51 not out from 61 balls, with Clive Morton unbeaten on 57 from 51, after Emma Slugg and Julien Humphreys had taken three wickets apiece to bowl Monmouth out for 110.

The 2nd XI were also among the wins, beating Chepstow CC's 2nd XI by 67 runs at home. Andrew Herbert's unbeaten 81 anchored the innings, with Dipesh Purohit's 44 adding impetus, as Penarth posted 221 for 6. Rajeev Marwaha and Ayaan Anis took three wickets apiece as Chepstow were bowled out for 154.

It was a tougher day in the league for the 1st XI, who lost by 10 wickets away to Pontarddulais CC on Saturday. Aditya Singh's 71 was the highlight of Penarth's 227 for 9, but Richard Grant (113) and Sam Jardine (83) put on an unbroken opening stand to knock off the runs without losing a wicket.

The 3rd XI had a heavy defeat away to Vale CC at Corntown, losing by 153 runs. Vale's Matthew Thomas (71) and Phil Cadogan (62 not out) propelled the hosts to 286 for 3, and Mostafa Akhondzada then took 5 for 20 as Penarth were bowled out for 133.

The 4th XI also lost, beaten by seven wickets at home by Bridgend Town CC's 3rd XI. Dan Grosfils (41) and Conrad Adams (36) top-scored as Penarth were bowled out for 158, with Naseem Miakheil taking 4 for 16, and Bridgend chased the total down for the loss of three wickets.

Three wins from six senior fixtures, then, with the 1st XI's cup run, the standout story.
In the leagues, the 1st XI are eighth in Premier Division One on 129 points, 77 behind leaders Cardiff CC. The 2nd XI are sixth in Division 03 on 157, 60 adrift of Ponthir CC. The 3rd XI sit eighth in Division 06 on 143 points, 93 behind leaders Taw CC. The 4th XI have slipped to fifth in Division 10 on 179, 40 points off leaders Taw CC's 2nd XI. The 5th XI are sixth in Division 15 on 156 points, 80 behind leaders Caerdydd Barbarians.
Next Saturday, the 1st XI host Abergavenny CC at the Main Square, the 2nd XI travel to Blackwood Town CC, the 3rd XI are at home to Hopkinstown CC, the 4th XI make the trip to Abergavenny CC's 3rd XI, and the 5th XI host Miskin Manor CC's 4th XI.
As ever, the bar at the Athletic Ground is open through the weekend, with food vans on site and the new outdoor benches in place — all supporters welcome to come down and watch some cricket in Penarth's 175th year.
