Last Saturday’s relentless rainfall resulted in the postponement of roughly half of the scheduled Division 1 Cup round 2 ties.

As usual, the cup takes precedence, and it’s the following Saturday’s league fixtures that end up being postponed.

This is disappointing for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it would have been a good idea to have a crack at Cambrian soon after turning them over in the league 34–26 and following that up with a 60–7 stroll against struggling Abercynon.

Fifteen tries in two games if two games is good form in anyone’s book.

Admittedly, Cambrian’s 66–12 demolition of Llanishen the previous week (their first league win) might yet be something to bear in mind.

Secondly, the now postponed league fixture would have been away at bottom club Abercwmboi, without a win (or any points) after three games.

The Cynon Valley club were well fancied for this season after last term’s late run to finish in third place ahead of Penarth.

Still, there’s no denying the Seasiders know their way to the try-line and their try-scoring rate per game is 5.20, which is way ahead of anyone else in the division.

So, going into the November international break, Penarth can look forward to a next league outing on November 21 (at home to Dowlais) before the critical away fixture at The Molex Stadium (aka Virginia Park) against leaders Caerphilly.

Not exactly winner-takes-all, but a real test of both sides’ promotion credentials.

Here’s hoping for better weather this coming weekend and progress in the Division 1 Cup for Penarth.

WRU Division 1 Cup: Saturday, October 31, 2026, Penarth v Cambrian Welfare, Athletic Field, Lavernock Road, CF64 3QH. Kick-off 2.30pm.
