AFTER the successes of Bro Morgannwg, in winning both u16 sections, and Llantwit, in sharing the u14girls’ competition with Cardiff High, at the Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan Schools’ A Cup Final, there were further good performances from Vale schools at the B Cup Final.

The A Cup Final is for the winning schools in each of the four sections at the six preliminary round matches while the B Cup Final is for second placed schools.

Both finals were held at Jenner Park, with competing schools able to field two athletes in each individual event. Close competitions were the order of the day in all four sections.

In the u16 boys’ contest, for pupils in years 9 & 10, Vale schools provided the A winner in 8 events.

Year 9 Arran Reid, the Cardiff & Vale Schools u15 200 metres champion, finished ahead of the field over 200 metres and won the long jump with a leap of 5.20 metres while his Barry Comprehensive team-mate, year 10 Michael Hamonda, claimed a double in the 80 metres hurdles and javelin. Cowbridge dominated the two middle distance races with experienced Cardiff & Vale Schools year 10 cross-country representatives Elliot Mears and Oliver Beaman winning the 800 metres and 1500 respectively. St Cyres also enjoyed success with year 10 pupils Duke Durham and Ben Harding taking the 300 metres and shot respectively and year 9 Matthew Roan clearing 1.60 metres to add victory in this event to his win in the Cardiff & Vale Schools u15 championships.

Thanks to a solid all-round team performance, Barry Comprehensive claimed this title with a score of 183.5, with Cowbridge (175) second and St Cyres (147) fifth.

The Llantwit u16 girls finished second behind Llanishen in their preliminary match but responded here with a very positive set of performances, which included A wins for Natalie Parsons (75 Hur) and Jess Richards (Shot) while year 9 Lucy Taylor was another Cardiff & Vale Schools u15 champion to win her speciality event, the long jump. In addition, experienced year 9 Fiona Bray (Cowbridge) won the 1500 metres and Bryn Hafren gained victories in the 100 metres and javelin thanks to the efforts of year 10 pupils Ellie Carter and Toyah Newman. The end result was a win for Llantwit with a score of 175, four points ahead of second placed Cowbridge, with Bryn Hafren (148) sharing third spot.

Teams from Stanwell narrowly failed to take titles in both u14 competitions.

Stanwell year 8 Tom Williams was the top Vale performer in the boys contest, winning both the 100 metres and the long jump, as his school (176) finished just one point behind the winning team from Bishop of Llandaff (177).

The Penarth school had three A winners in the girls competition – year 8 pupils Sara Doust and Natalie Gill in the 800 and high jump respectively and year 7 Kate Coker over 1500 metres – while Bryn Hafren provided both sprint winners, Catrin Cosier in the 100 and Carys Knapman over 200.

The Llanishen girls, beaten by Llantwit in their preliminary, just held off the Stanwell challenge, winning with a score of 166 with Ysgol Gyfun Plasmawr and Stanwell sharing second spot on 163, and Bryn Hafren (147) fourth.

Team winners from this competition will receive their plaque at the Cardiff & the Vale Schools Track & Field Presentation Evening, which will be held at Cardiff High School on Tuesday, September 8, starting at 7 pm.
