GLAMORGANSHIRE Golf Club 1st team gained promotion to the Premier Division following a great team performance away at Pontypridd.

The 1sts won the Premier Division for the first time in 24 years in 2008, but following this magnificent achievement they were demoted the following year.

Promotion is testament to the commitment of the squad and the great team spirit of all players.

The match at Pontypridd was rearranged after Glamorganshire's attempt to win the team championships at Borth & Ynyslas.

Glamorganshire beat Mold 4-1 but narrowly went down 3-2 to the home side in the next round.

Congratulations to Newport Golf Club who won the title.

The final match at Pontypridd was a tense affair with all players knowing they needed a win to gain promotion.

Nick Grimmitt and Mat Mullooly went out first and despite a poor 1st hole were 4 up through 9 holes.

Chris Payne and Jordan Price Davies were not on best form and went 3 down through 9.

Simon Curle and Brian Rigby started poorly and then rallied to play some great birdie golf.

Nick and Mat lost a few holes on the back 9 and then knuckled down to gain a 4&3 victory whilst Brian & Simon played great to beat there pair 5&4.

Chris and Jordan dug deep and went 1 up through 17 holes but failed to finish the game off and earned a hard fought half.

Team Captain Nick Grimmitt said: "This was a great team performance. Everyone has been focused on getting back to the Premier Division and I am delighted for the team and the club.

"We are back where we belong".

Nick added: "We have great strength in depth in the club with new players such as Mark Lewis playing off +1 coming into the club, and competition for places is now very keen.

"We look forward to next year with great expectation and thank PADS, of Barry, for their support in sponsoring the team kit."
