CURTIS Mathews was the only Vale athlete to receive one of the three major individual awards at the end-of-season Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan Schools’ Track & Field Presentation Evening.

At a packed Junior Hall at Cardiff High School, the Barry & Vale Harrier, who, in 2009, received the Capitol Shopping Centre Endeavour Cup, was awarded the more prestigious Bob Cypher trophy to mark another excellent summer of progress.

Still eligible as an international u20 athlete in 2011, it will be interesting to see what progress the former Barry Comprehensive product makes on a pathway which, hopefully, will lead on to membership of Team Wales at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Three other Vale pupils were mentioned as young contenders for the Frank Ireland Cup for the Outstanding athlete, an award which was presented to year 10 Ffion Bodilly (Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf) for her hat trick of u17 high jump victories at the Aviva Welsh Schools’ championships, the Aviva SIAB u17 international and the Sainsbury’s UK School Games.

The trio included two exciting year 9 pupils – the Stanwell year 9 duo of Tom Williams (sprinter/long jump) and Matteo Holmes (thrower) – both of whom made their mark in the u15 age group at Welsh level this summer. With the Aviva 2011 SIAB u17 track & field international scheduled to be held at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium on July 16, it will be interesting to see if the duo can force their way into the Welsh Schools’ team in their first summer in the age group.

Cowbridge year 8 George Griffiths, a pupil with another year to come as an u15, was the third member of the trio. He created a little piece of history at the Aviva UK Sportshall Finals in March by becoming the first ever Cardiff & the Vale Schools pupil to win an individual title, claiming the u13 boys’ standing long jump title with a new Welsh best of 2.68 metres.

187 pupils from 30 schools and colleges across Cardiff and the Vale were listed on the programme as due to receive awards.

Cowbridge was the top Vale school, receiving five championship and cup trophies, and gaining the special trophy for the Overall Points awarded in championships.

Sadly, there were no u20 Welsh Schools international or representative matches in 2010 but three Vale pupils, all from St Cyres – year 10 Matthew Roan and year 11s Bethan Daw and Ben Harding - received plaques to mark their international selection. For Bethan, that award completed an international double as she added an appearance in the 1500 metres at the Aviva SIAB u17 track & field international at Glasgow to her run in March at the Aviva SIAB u17 cross-country international at Truro.

In bringing the evening to an end, Rob Glaves (St Cyres), the association’s Chairman, took the opportunity to thank key individuals and groups for their contribution to another successful summer. Included in his list were: the pupils who have taken part in activities, the staff and schools who have supported events, the schools which have organised events, the qualified officials who have assisted at fixtures, the parents of athletes, Mr Ian Dixon (photographer), Mr Ted Nicholson (British Red Cross), the staff of the Vale Council and Jenner Park, the Vale of Glamorgan Council for its grant aid, track & field and sportshall team managers including Miss Daniella Woolf (Llantwit), Mrs Melissa Hunter (Stanwell), Miss Alisa Cullen (St Cyres), and Mr Rhys Beynon (Bro Morgannwg), and the newspapers which have reported on our events – including the Barry & District News and Penarth Times.
