NEWPORT County AFC have strengthened their midfield for their League Two promotion push by signing Jack Evans from Swansea City.

The 22-year-old has headed east to Rodney Parade on a permanent deal until the end of the season after spending the first half of the campaign on loan with Cypriot side Pafos.

Evans came through the ranks with the Swans and made an impression with the under-23s, playing alongside the likes of Joe Rodon, Daniel James, Oli McBurnie and Alfie Mawson.

In the summer of 2018 he was diagnosed with cancer after suffering from stomach pain but last season he made his first team debut for the Swans in their Carabao Cup win against Cambridge United.

Evans went on loan to Mansfield last January, although he never appeared for the Stags in the coronavirus-curtailed campaign, and now he is heading to Newport to hunt a Football League debut.

Penarth Times:

“I’m thrilled to be here and I can’t wait to get going. It’s a Welsh club and the style of play suits me, so I think it’s a perfect fit,” said the midfielder, who played for the Swans Under-21s against County in the 2017/18 EFL Trophy.

“The move has been in the works for a little while and when the opportunity came up, I jumped at the chance.

“It’s a really exciting time for the club given where they are in the league table, so I’m looking forward to getting started.”

Evans adds to the midfield options along with fellow former Swan Josh Sheehan, captain Joss Labadie, Scot Bennett, Robbie Willmott, Lewis Collins and on-loan Jamie Devitt, while Matty Dolan could also move forward after being converted to a central defender.

Manager Michael Flynn said: “Jack is a player who is very good technically and can handle the ball with ease.

“He’s a character to be admired after the setbacks he has had in life and I’m looking forward to working with him. I would like to thank Swansea City for their help in making this deal happen.”

Evans is available for Sunday's FA Cup tie against Brighton.
