Chris Froome slipped out of the top 10 in the overall standings at the Ruta del Sol after suffering a puncture towards the end of Saturday’s fourth stage.
Four-time Tour de France champion Froome, who began the day in seventh, crossed the line one minute and 19 seconds after stage winner Tim Wellens to fall to 14th overall.
Belgian Wellens had too much for Movistar’s Mikel Landa after the pair broke away from the rest of the pack, beating him to the line by five seconds to claim the leader’s red jersey.
Froome’s Team Sky team-mate Wout Poels, who had led after three stages, finished fourth, just behind Jakob Fuglsang.
