THE Biomass 'incinerator' facility in the Barry Docks has commenced its 'pre-commissioning' phase, which is likely to cause noise and steam emissions for the next several weeks.

Vale of Glamorgan Council have been advised that the work, which began yesterday (February 14), will involve steam cleaning of the boiler and associated pipework.

The council have advised that this is likely to cause noise disruption and steam emissions for a period, however Biomass claim that this will not be representative of the site when fully commissioned.

An operating permit was granted to the facility recently and it is scheduled to begin operating in the imminent future. A revised planning application for several of the site's facilities, including essential water tanks, is still to be considered by the Vale council, however this seems unlikely to delay the start of operations.

Works taking place over the next several weeks are to be restricted to between 9am and 6pm Monday to Friday in order to minimise disrupting to neighbouring residents.

Biomass frequently came under fire during the plant's construction phase for allegedly conducting works outside of their permitted timeframes, however Vale of Glamorgan Council said at the time that no conclusive evidence had ever been presented of this.
