Old Penarthians Minis on tour

TOUR: Old Pens Minis and Juniors at Gowerton RFC

8:30pm Wednesday 22nd May 2013

THE Old Penarthians Minis and Juniors recently travelled to Gowerton RFC to play their respective counterparts. More than 70 people made the journey to support the U7s, U8s, U9s, U11s and U12s, including many parents and children from the U6s. Due to a lack of space at Gowerton RFC the U12s played their matches two miles away at Loughor RFC. Their first game was against the host club 'Gowerton U12s'.  The journey along the M4 must have affected the Old Pens who started slowly with very little dynamism. However, strong running by Jay Morse and Ethan Barry and tackling by Ellis Smith, Matthew Hocking and the ever enthusiastic Jake Finch kept the Old Pens in the game.  As the game progressed the Old Pens forwards came into their own and dominated the rucks and mauls. However minor errors saw the host side capitalise on a number of occasions allowing them to outscore the Old Pens by 19Ð0. The second game was against the home side 'Loughor RFC', who had earlier convincingly beaten Gowerton U12s. This fixture saw a far better performance from the Old Pens who tackled everything   that moved. This was spearheaded by the lively Mitchell Pearce who appeared to be everywhere. Mitchell's aggressive tackling and sniping runs seemed to motivate all the U12s leading to fine performances by the bulldozing forwards Jonathan Jayne, Harrison Jalil, Tomos Harding Dutch, Dan Hicks, Hal Griffiths Kidd and the lively backs Alex Brown, Joe Hitches, Ben Hanson, Callum Russell and Thomas Ralph. The third game was against a touring side from Southwell RFC, Nottingham. This game proved to be somewhat of a turning point. Everything the Old Pens had been practising in training came to fruition, with forwards and backs joining in a running style of rugby reminiscent of Barbarian sides of old. At the final whistle, the two tries by winger Rhys James and one by the dynamic Mitchell Pearce gave the Old Pens a superior score to that of their opposition. Congratulations to all the 12s who had worked so hard not just during these games but all year. The U11s played their Gowerton counterparts at their hosts home ground . An exciting match saw the young Penarthians give a dominant forwards display, with strong running and driving from props Callum Jones and Adam Hall. An outstanding display by Jack Garrett, who seemed to be everywhere, also crossed over for two tries. The effort given by Jack earned him the man of the match award.  Captain Arron Smith was also constantly in the thick of things, with his jinking runs and aggressive tackling. His efforts were also rewarded when he crossed for a try. A special moment for the U11s occurred shortly afterwards. Outside half Calan Cross was given the ball. He looked up, saw a gap in the Gowerton defence and sprinted  20m to score his first try for the U11s. Other performances of note were given by the lively scrum half Yoav Abramovich and the bustling centre Curtis. The U9s played a far more experienced Gowerton team but kept up with them for most of the game. Exceptional running and evasion skills by Jac Powell and Georgia Morgan led to a brace of tries from both. Also of note was the tackling by Rhys stout, James Reynolds, Jack Chandler, Elis Cross, Jon OÕSullivan and Ifan Davies. Special mention should be given to Ben Roberts who gave his all for the team and ended up spending the majority of the day with his parents at Morriston Hospital. On returning to Penarth Ben underwent a small operation to straighten a broken arm. All at the Old Pens wish Ben a speedy recovery and hope to see him at our presentation day on the 8th June. On the adjacent pitch, the U8s game against the host team was a finely balanced affair. A try count in favour of the Old Pens of 9-7 was in no small effort due to the top try scorer Thomas Stout, and the supporting cast of Elliot Dyment-Salmon, and Ieuan Harris. All the boys who played should be congratulated on what was a fantastic team effort. The coaches were extremely pleased that all the hard work that had been carried out on addition training nights on recent Fridays seemed to pay off. The U7s also played at Gowerton. The report on their games was printed in last weeks Penarth Times. After the games food was provided by Gowerton RFC and the festivities carried on until the early evening, ending a fantastic day out for all the mini and Junior teams and their families. The Old Pens would like to thank everyone for getting involved and making it a great day out for all the club. To bring the events at the club up to date, last Sunday saw a rearranged game for the U12s against local Cardiff side Old Illtydians U12s. This was an extremely even contest which was played in a fantastic spirit. It was a complete team effort and no one boy could be singled out. Two Tries by Rhys James ensured the the Old Pens outscored the opposition 10-5.

Penarth junior cricket

8:00pm Wednesday 22nd May 2013

U9s - The 'Bears' produced some good accurate bowling from Henry Hanson, brilliant quick runs from Daniel Ingram and Ben Plodder, three super catches and a run out from Lewis Ingram, some stylish stroke play from Max Plodder, some serious smashes from Tom Johnson, really roaming run scoring from Rhys Mottram and some sizzling spinners from Oscar Harrison. A good day all round; three great games and two good wins. In their recent tournament, the Penarth 'Golds' under 9s played three - won three. Notable performances - Arran Noor Mohammed brilliant fielding, Zac Essenhigh great batting, including some six hitting, and Rohan Rayani excellent bowling. In the U11 'Golds,' Penarth bowled first and restricted Lisvane A, including five county players, to 243. Gregg Cross (2-6 from two overs), Benji Mulcahy (two overs for two runs), wickets for Rhys McGowan and Ethan Mulcahy and debutant Jayden Goodwin, who bowled three overs (1-2). Then the real fun started as Penarth surpassed the Lisvane total in the 11th over and went on to post a score of 323 to win by 90 runs. Lisvane only managed to take two wickets. There were double figure runs for Rhys McGowan , Benji Mulcahy  and Jayden Goodwin and Ethan Mulcahy top scored with 25, including his first ever six. And all this against one of the strongest teams in the league. The Penarth players  showed great sportsmanship. The Lisvane coach and parents were full of praise. The Penarth U11 Bears played at the Athletic Field against Sully U11B on the 13th in  their first home match of the season. They scored 265 runs to beat a battling Sully U11 team by 11 runs. Captain Tom Griffiths lost the toss and Penarth were asked to bat first. Billy McCullagh top scored with 12 runs off the bat, with Tom Griffiths close behind with 11 runs. Matthew George, Iwan Meddins and Karanvir Lutchman-Singh all contributed significantly with the bat and Rhys Knapper almost hit a six, the ball falling just inside the boundary. Ossian Lambert-Jones faced 19 balls but never once looked like losing his wicket and giving the opposition six easy runs. With a good score to defend, Emily 'Malinger' Griffiths and Matthew George opened the bowling well, taking a wicket each in the first two overs. Lewis Ingram bowled impressively, while Billy McCullagh took two wickets in an over. Special mention must be made of debutant Billy Heale who took his first wicket in competitive cricket with a ball of great line and length. Tom Griffiths and Iwan Meddins made it hard for Sully's best pair, batting last, to close the gap. With Sully requiring 17 runs off the final six balls, Matthew George was asked to bowl at the death and did so very well with four dot balls. On a cold, windy evening, Penarth Bears fielded well and Rhys kept wicket with confidence. Overall, it was another deserved victory for a team who play like a team and genuinely are pleased for their team mates when they do well which is great for all to see. The monsoon of Tuesday, May 14, washed out the entire U13 cricket but the U15 Golds managed a second win by beating Lisvane away thanks to more lusty blows from Ray Vandyck. All newcomers are welcome; please see our website for details http://penarthcc.weebly.com/junior-teams.html

Windsor seconds tennis season underway

3:30pm Wednesday 22nd May 2013

THE Windsor Ladies' second tennis team began their summer season on May 5 away to Chepstow. The beautiful Bank Holiday weekend proved troublesome for Chepstow who could only manage to find two pairings, meaning Windsor were up by two rubbers without raising a racket. Windsor's first pair combined the experience of Cathy O'Doherty with the youth of Emma Thomas and they won their first set 6-4, but Chepstow rallied to take the second  6-4 before riding the momentum to win the third set tie break. However, they were not deterred at all and went on to win their second rubber convincingly 6-3, 6-2. The experienced second pair of Ann Davies (vice-captain) and Elspeth Hughes had a chance to sit the first round out and pick up some useful tips before playing the Chepstow first pair. They obviously paid attention because they went on to win 6-1, 6-2. The third pairing of Edwina Gill and Grace Samuel, who normally play for Windsor 3rds, had a brilliant win against the Chepstow third pair 6-3, 6-4 to cap an excellent opening to the season for the visiting side. Their second fixture was again away, this time at Lisvane. Cathy O'Doherty and new first-pair partner Sarah Parkhouse proved too much for Lisvane, winning their first rubber 6-4, 6-1, and their second 6-1, 6-0. Elspeth Hughes and Emma Thomas played second pair and went into a third set tie break against their opposite numbers but managed to hang in and get the win. Their second rubber proved more straightforward and they picked up an impressive 6-4, 6-1 win over Lisvane's top pair. The third pairing of Ann Davies and Seren Marsh won their first rubber 6-4, 6-1 and their second rubber 6-4, 7-6 to complete a whitewash for Windsor and send an early message to the rest of the league. Radyr 2nds were the next team to try and derail Windsor's momentum but again the talented pool of players available to captain Alison Ray proved too much for their opponents. Radyr had been the only team to blot WindsorÕs copy book last season during their promotion from Division 3 but they were not to repeat the feat. The pairings of Cathy O'Doherty and Sarah Parkhouse, Elspeth Hughes and Seren Marsh and Ann Davies and Tracy French romped to a 5-1 overall win. With confidence flying high, the ladies now travel to Cwmbran with their sights firmly set on another promotion.

Glamorganshire Ladies

TUESDAY, May 7, was - weather wise - the best Glamorganshire Golf Club ladies' day of the year to date. Forty-six ladies enjoyed a warm, sunny day regardless of some not so hot scores.
