A VALE school which has promoted positive attitudes towards people with learning disabilities has been recognised for their sterling work.
Organised by the Understanding Disability Group consisting of representatives from a range of organisations, an event was hosted by Vale of Glamorgan Council chairman Cllr Maurice Nugent, to honour the recipients.
He presented awards along with Cardiff county councillor Sue Lent.
Congratulating the winners, Cllr Nugent said: "The group believes opportunities must be created to enable people with a learning disability to take part in the normal activities of a community such as education, work, play, leisure and family life, and these awards recognise the people who are helping to make a change in our community. They show that people with disabilities can participate in every walk of life.
"The group is challenging attitudes which limit access to such activities and opportunities." Winner of the school award was Palmerston Primary School where children with physical and learning disabilities are included in all aspects of the school.
Teachers and assistants provide a vital link with parents by passing on information, via direct contact and home books and, as well as the academic inclusion, children with disabilities take part in all aspects of physical education both indoors and out.
Children with disabilities are helped to reach their potential during activities such as rounders, cricket and gym and are encouraged to participate in class and school assemblies.
Cllr Nugent said: "Overall, Palmerston provides a happy, well-integrated environment for all children regardless of disability."
Honoured with the group/organisation award was Cardiff Bay-based Hijinx Theatre who are frequent visitors to community venues in the Vale with entertaining, innovative and challenging productions.
Other awards went to local man Raymond Herrick, who, through the management committee of Rumney War Memorial for 15 years, has raised awareness of disability issues such as access and inclusion; and to employers ASCOM Telecommunications Ltd, who designed a job for a blind member of staff with learning disabilities.
