Plea to clean up our shabby town

PENARTH residents are urging the council to take action, on several issues, to do with the overall appearance of the town.

Local man Alan Morris, of Stanwell Road said: "I love Penarth, but I have seen it deteriorate over the years".

He explained that although the pier was in satisfactory condition, the outside of the pavilion was presently "in a terrible state of disrepair", because it had not been painted for around ten years.

He added that as it is a listed building, the council should keep up with the maintenance work.

He described the outside appearance of the pavilion as "shocking." Mr Morris said:

"Local residents would like to see the pavilion repainted and new windows put in, so that it is presentable."

He added that some of the windows have remained boarded up for months.

He explained that the pavilion is a vital landmark in the town, and that Penarth will only attract tourists if the attractions are kept in good condition.

Local residents are also calling for something to be done about the litter problem in places such as the edge of Alexandra Park, known as 'The Dingle', where he stated that there is "a disgusting amount of litter".

Mr Morris believes that young people would use bins if they were larger, bolder and emptied more frequently.

The properties along the esplanade are also causing concern. He explained that the owners should take a pride in the appearance of their properties, because some of the restaurants have peeling paint work.

Mr Morris wants to know why the council is not doing anything about these problems.

A Vale of Glamorgan spokesperson was unable to comment on the above issues at this present time.
