Tower plans are blasted by Plaid CymruHead

PLAID Cymru has slammed plans to increase residential development at the Cardiff Bay Sports Village, a move they claim will bring misery to commuters from Penarth, Dinas Powys and the Vale.

Plaid Cymru Penarth press officer Alwyn Evans has blasted a Cardiff City Council scheme to increase the numbers of apartments on the Sports Village site.

He said: "They intend to bring in an American housing development company to build 34-storey apartment blocks facing the river Ely.

"They have already allowed Prospect Place to rise from 770 apartments to 990 and increased the number of other apartments and houses in the rest of the Sports Village from 997 to 1,127, but this latest step is just ridiculous.

"It is the final straw. The 34-storey towers are 12 higher than Wales' tallest building, Altolusso, and even by conservative estimates will mean a further 1,000 apartments on site.

"The traffic from all this, on top of all those buildings already committed, will pour onto the Cogan Spur through a new traffic light system.

"Anyone attempting to travel in from Penarth, Dinas Powys or Barry in the near future had better try walking or swimming - since they certainly won't be able to get into Cardiff in the morning by bus or car."

Mr Evans is also concerned that the bascule bridge proposed from near the Oystercatcher to the Sports Village will turn the marina into a giant free car park.

A spokesperson for Cardiff Council said: "The total number of dwellings on the Sports Village site will be 1,127, of which 130 will be affordable housing units.

"As part of the development process a comprehensive traffic assessment has been carried out using independent consultants and has demonstrated that a new, significantly improved, transport infrastructure will cope with any additional traffic.

"As part of the new infrastructure, over 1m worth of improvements will be made to the Barons Court junction in the Vale of Glamorgan.

"These will include the provision of safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists across each arm of the new junction.

"The proposal to build a bascule bridge has been put to the NAW and is awaiting their consideration.
