EUROPE's longest hospital corridor is now home to more than 80 pieces of artwork for the relaunch of the Paintings in Hospitals South Wales Hub.

The display at University Hospital Llandough boasts never seen before works from the Paintings in Hospitals art collection which have been gifted by the Contemporary Art Society Wales.

The aim is to enhance the experience of patients, visitors and staff alike and the displays include 'art for everyone', 'art for children and young people', and 'art for old people'.

Amisha Karia, head of Collections and Programming, said: “Art makes a significant contribution to improving the lives, health and wellbeing of patients, service users, carers, visitors and staff.

"I am delighted that we are able to showcase so many of our artworks at Llandough Hospital.

I am sure that patients, staff and visitors will find the dynamism of the changing display of great interest, providing inspiration and solace. The display also explores ideas around how art can enhance health and wellbeing.

Having artwork displayed at Llandough Hospital helps to create a more comfortable and less intimidating atmosphere for all.”

The hub site at UHL acts as Paintings in Hospitals' regional centre for South Wales, allowing the charity to better reach people in the area and enabling local communities to feel the benefits of having artworks on display in their care environments. The display showcases artworks that are available to be borrowed by all other health and social care organisations throughout the region.

Peter Welsh, general manager at University Hospital Llandough, said: “The Health Board is absolutely delighted to have the Painting in Hospitals South Wales hub based at the University Hospital Llandough.

"The artworks have already been well received and I’m confident they will be of real interest to the patients, visitors and the wider public who use the site.”
