CLAIRE Sweeney is just one of the stars in this brand new production of the smash hit musical comedy Hairspray. The much-loved show, which comes to the New Theatre, Cardiff, from Monday, March 21 to Saturday, March 26, is guaranteed to get everyone dancing.

Set in 1960s Baltimore, the story follows Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart. When her audition to become a TV star makes her a local celebrity, she uses her new-found fame to fight for equality and bag local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.

Claire Sweeney (Educating Rita, Chicago) stars as Velma Von Tussle, and is joined by Brenda Edwards (Chicago, We Will Rock You, X Factor) as Motormouth Maybelle. Freya Sutton will reprise the role of Tracy Turnblad alongside Jon Tsouras as Corny Collins, Dex Lee as Seaweed, Ashley Gilmour as Link Larkin and Layton Williams (Bad Education, Billy Elliot) as Duane.

Hairspray is based on the 1988 film written and directed by John Waters, which starred Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry and Sonny Bono. The musical itself has won a plethora of Tony and Olivier Awards since its debut in 2002.
