LABOUR'S Stephen Doughty has won the Cardiff South and Penarth by-election.

He polled 9,193 votes, ahead of the Conservatives' Craig Williams who scored 3,859. Overall turn-out in the consituency was just over 25 per cent.

Third was the Lib Dems' Bablin Molik with 2,103; fourth was Luke Nicholas of Plaid with 1,854; fifth was UKIP's Simon Zeigler with 1,179; the Green Party's Anthony Slaughter was sixth with 800; Andrew Jordan of the SLP was seventh with 235; and Communist Robert Griffiths came in eighth with 213.

The 5,334 majority means Labour retains the seat vacated by Alun Michael, who stood down after 25 years as MP to fight the Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

Mr Doughty said: "I am honoured to be chosen to represent such a great constituency. I will endeavour to do my best for everyone in the constituency, whether they voted for me or not."

Conservative Craig Williams said: "I am happy to get a strong second place."

Former MP Alun Michael said: "It's a victory for dedication and hard work. Stephen thoroughly deserves it."

* The results of the PCC election are due later today (Friday). Turn-out is expected to be low.
