PENARTH Town Council is set to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War with a special event in October this year.
The event will feature an exhibition of priceless souvenirs from WWI that a Penarth woman recently found hidden away with her father-in-law’s belongings.
The items included war medals, diaries, post cards and photographs from the front line, all of which have been preserved in impressive condition.
A number of local groups and historians that have been part of the town council’s WWI Commemorative Group will also participate in the event that will be held at West House on October 18.
As part of commemorating the outbreak of the First World War the Penarth Times will also feature a weekly “This Day in History” diary. Each week the paper will focus on how a local group was affected by the war both at home and on the front line.
Next week it will feature the Western Front Organisation, while the likes of the Army Cadets, Air Cadets, Royal British Legion and RAFA will contribute over the next few months.
