A BRASS band are set to perform at the Windsor Gardens to mark the centenary of the outbreak of WWI this weekend.

On Saturday, July 12, the Windsor Gardens will resound to the sound of the Vale of Glamorgan Brass Band playing music from the World War I period.

Making use of the Victorian Band Stand, the band will play a medley of songs, tunes, marches and hymns.

It is hoped that many of the songs and hymns, such as ‘Pack up Your Troubles’, It’s a Long Way To Tipperary’ and ‘Eternal Father Strong to Save' will be familiar enough to encourage people to sing along with the band. Words will also be provided so everyone can sing along..

The event is being organised by the Friends of St Augustine’s to mark the centenary of the outbreak of WW1.

Chair of the Friends, Tricia Griffiths, said: "We hope that people will come along and whilst enjoying the music, also recall with respect and honour the enormous sacrifices made by so many men and women."

There is no charge for the event, but donations towards the Roll of Honour Project in St Augustine’s church will be welcome.

The band starts playing at 3pm and will play until 4.30pm with a short break. If the weather is fine, it is suggested that rugs, picnics and even sun hats are brought along.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council have sponsored the event.
