BELLE Vue Park in Penarth will be hosting a very special centenary celebration day to mark 100 years of the park on Saturday, September 13.

The day, hosted by Friends of Belle Vue, will celebrate the park through the years and is a free event for people of all ages.

Activities begin at 11.15am with the official opening and unveiling of the new water fountain in the park.

From 11.30am to 12.30pm children will be able to participate in a back-to-earth activity by designing plant pots and planting seeds with the help of Penarth Greening and Penarth Woodcraft.

A lunch from history will be served in the Belle Vue clubhouse from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

In the afternoon, between 1.30pm and 3.00pm, visitors will be able to enjoy historic re-enactments and activities, music from the past century, historic dressing up, children’s games and activities from the past 100 years, old fashioned sweets and refreshments. The afternoon’s events will end at 3.00pm after the filling and burying of a centenary time capsule.

Penarth councillor Gwyn Roberts, speaking during a town council meeting last week, said that it would be interesting to see what was in the capsule in 50 years time.

During the leisure and amenities committee meeting he invited his fellow councillors to write in a book commenting on what Penarth is like now so future generations could look back on it.

Celebrations will continue into the evening (from 6.00pm to 8.30pm) with the chance to enjoy displays of the history of Belle Vue Park over the years, along with food and drink while enjoying the music of duo Sweet Solace.

The entire day is free to local families and supporters of Belle Vue Park and is funded by Big Lottery Fund and Friends of Belle Vue Park. More information about the day is available on the Friends of Belle Vue Park Facebook page.
