A MOTHER and daughter from Penarth are stepping up for several charities by organising a fundraising haircut as well as a crochet event.

Eirian Thomas' daughter Mairwen, who attends Ysgol Pen y Garth, in Penarth, will be donating the hair she has cut to the Little Princess Charity which

She will also be raising money for the Nepal earthquake appeal with the cut which will take place on Friday, June 19.

The original target was £100 but they have already comfortably surpassed this figure. Eirian said: "Mairwen does not do stuff by halves. She has shown so much iniative for a seven-year-old."

Mairwen had the idea after a young friend of the family was diagnosed with a brain tumour which led to her having two eighteen-month rounds of chemotherapy from which she has lost her hair twice.

Donations can be made at the just giving page https://www.justgiving.com/mairwenthomas/.

Eirian is also supporting the 2 Wish upon a Star charity by holding a stitch-in coffee morning on Saturday, June 27, at All Saints Church from 10am-12pm

She coordinates the blankets project (called Cwtch of Comfort) for 2 Wish.

2 Wish works to provide bereavement support for suddenly bereaved parents and training for professionals who may deal with suddenly bereaved parents and siblings.

As part of this, the charity provides bereavement boxes, containing pyjamas, information about what happens after a sudden child death and other resources.

Each box also contains a handmade blanket or quilt - a non-clinical blanket made with love that parents can wrap their child in. During the past year the project's blankets have gone from being available in just to hospitals, to being available in all but 2 A&E departments across Wales. Volunteers have made more than 100 blankets in the last 12 months, but because the charity's reach is growing, more blankets are needed.

Eirian said: "We hope to roll this out nationwide in the future. We want to raise awareness of what we do and why we do it."
