ON A glorious morning with bright blue skies and gentle winds, 14 Valeways walkers set off from the Sportsman’s Rest at Peterston-super-Ely towards St Brides.

After a short distance they turned off the road into an ancient green lane leading to St Georges. This proved to be a little difficult underfoot but was safely negotiated passing a field on the way with alpacas and sheep.

After a short wait, they crossed and then walked alongside the railway rejoining the road to reach the closed Greendown Inn. Here with several buzzards overhead, they left the road and walked through several fields to reach the Coedarhydyglyn arboretum for a coffee stop.

Climbing through the trees with bluebells just emerging was very enjoyable and the party reached the edge of the woods to head for St Nicholas. Crossing a stile very much bitten by horses they walked through woods to reach the lane leading to St Nicholas.

Turning south they passed the church and then reached the school where they headed north again to be rewarded with glorious view towards the Garth and Brecon Beacons, as they dropped down past Kingsland to return to the pub for welcome food and drink.

Many thanks to the Sportsman’s Rest for use of their car park and their hospitality.
