RESCUE crews in Penarth were called out twice in a day this weekend.

Penarth RNLI and Penarth Coastguard were called out on Sunday, July 31 to people cut off by the tide.

The first call, received just before 2.40pm, was to a group of four people cut off at Sully Island.

The lifeboat station's D-class lifeboat was quickly on scene and able to rescue the people, bringing them safely back to the mainland to be met by coastguard officers.

The second call, received at 4.50pm was to two people who were cut off by the tide between Lavernock Point and the Captain's Wife pub in Sully.

Both the RNLI's Atlantic class and D-class inshore lifeboats were launched and crews were able to quickly locate the couple and return them to safety.

Jason Dunlop, lifeboat operations manager for Penarth RNLI, said: "I would encourage everyone walking on the shore to take note of the times of the tide before setting off as the tidal range in the Bristol Channel is very large and the incoming tide can quickly result in people becoming trapped."
