THERE was much to celebrate for Penarth Windsor Lawn Tennis Club as several members took part in the end of season Welsh Championships, with unprecedented levels of success.

The first of four age-group Welsh titles came from Neirin Gilani in the nine and under singles. Having scooped the eight and under crown the previous year, Neirin was hot favourite and did not disappoint, winning through his round-robin box with a 100 per cent record and completing a further three knockout victories to secure the title.

There was success too for his club mates Felix Bockelmann-Evans and Sebastian Griffiths who finished second and fourth respectively, a fine result for Felix and more good form for Sebastian after winning the Penarth Open Grade 3 already this summer.

Next came Conor Flynn, a recent recruit for the Larkwood Avenue outfit. Conor’s 10 and under national title was convincing, as he progressed through a knockout draw without dropping a single game and cementing his place as the best Mini Tennis player in Wales.

Conor’s brother Danny has proved to be a valuable addition to the clubs men's teams and he completed a family double by winning the 14 and under title, overcoming opponents from North, South West and South East Wales along the way.

Windsor’s very own club champion, coaching team member and ladies first team captain Ellie Lewis completed the quadruple success by winning the Ladies Doubles with her partner Emily Watson from North Wales.

Tennis squad director Robert Wedlake was full of praise, saying: “These are heady times for our club with a record membership, fantastic new clay court facilities and a Welsh Club of the Year award. To play our part in attracting and developing national champions is a by-product of years of hard work from coaches and committee members who are proud of our members’ success.

"We must congratulate players who are beginning their competitive journey too in Matthias Ruggles and Evan Lendrum who reached the South Wales Finals of the Syner eight and under red circuit which were held alongside the Welsh Championships, where Matthias received the Vale winners trophy. Morgan Sayce was a Sytner nine and under orange finalist having won five out of five circuit events, and Niamh Sweeney overcame a tough draw to win the 16 and under Girls plate. Club members Addy Bradley Glinister, Max Bradley Glinister, Annabel Richards and Alex Lewis also looked at home in this showpiece event.”

The club’s weekly calendar of club and coaching sessions resumes on September 5 with activities for all ages and abilities and the next showcase event will be the club's own finals day on September 24.
