AMENDED plans for flats and townhouses on the site of a former elderly day centre in Penarth have been submitted.

Gardenhurst on Holmesdale Place is the subject of an application for change of use to five apartments as well as four townhouses in the former car park at the rear of the property.

The original plans were for six apartments along with four town houses in the rear car park but this was withdrawn by the applicant in December last year.

This followed a site visit from town councillors who expressed their wish to recommend amendments at their planning committee in November.

This was because of concerns that the proposed design for the townhouses in the rear car park was "out of character" with the conservation area.

The Victorian building, which dates from the 1890s, was sold off by the Vale council in May 2014 after they deemed the building "no longer fit for purpose."

Despite a campaign against council plans to close the facility, it was left empty in April 2014 after the community mental health team for older people was relocated to Barry.

It was bought by EWM Properties in February this year.

The new plans involve the reinstatement of boundary walls and railings and "arboriculture" improvements to "reinstate the characteristics of the conservation area."

Local ward councillor, Clive Williams said he is planning to call the application in.

He said: "We have been unhappy with the previous applications that have come before us and I am waiting to hear from local residents, who are still considering these latest plans."

The revised application will go before town council again before being considered by Vale planners in the future.
