Residents have hit out at the removal of a dog waste bin by Penarth Town Council.

The bin, on Church Place North, was said to have been well-used by dog walkers before it was removed due to what the council called "fly-tipping issues".

But since then, doggie bags have been left on the ground where the bin stood, making the area dirty and unsightly for residents.

One near-by home homeowner, who did not wish to be named, said: "I know the people who have put their doggie bags on the old ground and do I blame the person? No, I don't.

"The bin should not have been removed."

Jeff Jones, 56, regularly walks his dog along the road and spoke of his "confusion" once he noticed the bin had been removed.

"I must say I got quite confused and angry when I noticed the bin had gone, because rather than dispose of dog litter there, I had to carry it all the way home," he added.

Another resident ,Mark Fisher, 49, of Plassey Street, said: "Dog waste is a problem along this road anyway - but without that bin I think it will get even worse.

"There's nothing worse than stepping in dog mess when it could have been prevented if a bin were available."

Emma Boylan, town clerk of Penarth Town Council, said anti-social behaviour had ended since the dog waste bin was removed, and that alternative general waste bin is available.

"This anti-social behaviour is bad for the environment and the residents and visitors to the area,"she added.

"As dog owners are permitted to use general waste bins to dispose of dog waste, an alternative general waste bin already located at the Triangle is now being used by dog owners.

"The decision to only use a co-waste bin on the site instead of two separate bins has resulted in a cessation of fly tipping which ultimately is the best outcome for everyone concerned.
