AN OLYMPIC gold medalist and a world renowned opera singer have been named in the New Year's Honours list.

Hannah Mills from Dinas Powys was awarded an MBE and Bryn Terfel, a Penarth resident, was given a knighthood by The Queen.

Miss Mills was victorious in the sailing last summer in Rio with her partner Saskia Clark and there have been calls in her home village of Dinas Powys to officially mark her success with ideas for a street name in a new housing development or a permanent landmark in the centre of the village both being floated.

She also helped launch Penarth RNLI's new boat appeal in July 2016 before she headed off to Brazil.

She won a silver medal at the 2012 games in London before going one better in Rio.

The community council are unveiling a plaque to Hannah on the Twyn in the centre of the old village on January 20 at 11pm

This should be a great event commemorating a very gifted Welsh sportswoman.

Bryn Terfel is a world famous bass-baritone opera singer and has sung all over the globe with some of the most well known companies.

He is a Grammy and Classical Brit award winner and is well known for his roles as Figaro and Falstaff amongst others.

Hannah Mills tweeted about her success: "MBE!! Quite simply fab.

"Thanks everyone for the support this year.

"Let's see what 2017 can deliver. It's got a lot to do to keep up with 2016."

Mary Gardner is the chairwoman of Penarth Operatic and Dramatic Society.

She said: "The society would like to extend huge congratulations to Bryn Terfel on his knighthood.

"It is well known that singing in Wales is Legendary.

"Bryn has inspired a generation of Welsh youngsters to use that talent to perform opera and musical theatre.

"We are blessed that he lives in Penarth. Well done Bryn. You deserve it."

Speaking about Hannah Mills' honour, Dinas Powys councillor Chris Franks said: "We are absolutely thrilled with the achievements of Hannah.

"People are delighted with her success.

"She is a lovely person and has brought great credit to Dinas Powys.

"It’s not often that we have an opportunity to celebrate such a momentous event of winning a gold medal."
