A COLLECTOR is appealing for more old advertising signs as his exhibition continues at the pier pavilion.

Penarth man and curator Victor Bonutto’s exhibition entitled “Sign of the Times” is currently on display in the main hall of Penarth Pier Pavilion and will be so until the second week of June.

He has been collecting late Victorian and early 20th century signs over the last 35 years.

The signs produced using enamel on steel created a colourful and hardwearing form of advertising and some date back to more than 100 years ago.

He has collected signs from all around the country of different sizes and advertising products including soap, chocolate and whisky.

He found one of the signs in the collection being used as a manhole cover and another as part of a garden fence.

Mr Bonutto said he believes the signs provide a real insight into the history of a given area and how important colour was to appeal to onlookers.

He said many of the larger ones tended to be outdoors and the smaller ones were kept indoors. Now he is looking for more signs to add to the collection.
