THE Golden Lion pub in Penarth has been awarded a coveted place in the Good Beer Guide for the sixth consecutive year.

The book, which is published by Camra (Campaign for Real Ale), documents a list of the pubs it considers to be the best cask ale outlets in the United Kingdom. Featuring in the guide is widely recognised as a hallmark of quality.

Pub manager Paul Harper said he was delighted the pub had once again been included in the 2018 edition.

"We’re really happy with it," he said.

"It just goes to show that we’re keeping good standards of beer, the customers are loving it and keep coming back.

"We’re very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve grown over the last nine-and-a-half years."

The pub has not been short of accolades in recent times, being named the Camra 'Pub of the Year' for Bridgend and the Vale of Glamorgan for both of the past two years.

Asked what the secret was to consistently achieving such high standards, Mr Harper said a lot of it was down to getting the simple things right, as well as keeping faith with local beers.

"What sells really well here, in terms of the real ales, are good local breweries," he said.

"Most of it is about just going back to basics, thing like having good cellar management. We try not to over-order so I don’t have too many beers down there. That way it keeps them all fresh.

"But the award winning beer helps as well!"

The Golden Lion is one of six pubs across South Wales owned by Penarthian John Bassett, of which four have made the Good Beer Guide this year.

"He’s over the moon. He’s thrilled," said Mr Harper.

"To get four out of six pubs into the book is amazing."

The Good Beer Guide 2018 is available to pre-order now on the Camra website.
