THE owner of independent Penarth book store Griffin Books has described their recent nomination at the British Book Awards as being an "honour."

The Windsor Road shop had been nominated for the award of 'Indepedent Bookshop of the Year 2018' for the Wales and Midlands regions – making the shortlist on their first year of applying to the competition.

The criteria set out by the British Book Awards for the prize included good book buying strategy, impressive and high profile events, close liaison with schools and other community outreach projects.

While the store narrowly missed out on the overall win, owner Mel Griffin said it had been a privilege to be considered for the award and that they wanted to make the coming year an even greater success.

"As it was our first year applying, it was a great honour to be shortlisted," said Ms Griffin.

"Although we didn't win our region, we're raring to go for next year's awards, and are hoping to make 2018 our best year yet.

"We'd like to thank everyone who voted and all the customers who make everything we do possible."
