IT'S a High Street success story in Penarth with the popular Bar 44 celebrating ten years on Windsor Road.

The tapas joint is part of the hugely successful 44 chain which originated in Cowbridge, created by Vale family the Morgans.

44 has made such a name for itself that it has appeared on BBCs Saturday Kitchen and Channel 4, Sunday Brunch.

It now has sites in Cardiff and Bristol including the impressive Asador 44 and hotel, Parador 44.

But for owners Natalie Isaac, and Tom and Owen Morgan, it all started in the Vale, in Cowbridge, before moving to Penarth. Owen explained it was a big decision coming to the coast, but one they do not regret.

“When we decided we wanted to expand, Penarth was a natural site for us,” Owen told the Penarth Times. “It’s a strong community town that supports local business.”

That is something sister Natalise emphasises, Penarth’s love of local.

Natalie says Bar 44 is part of Penarth Business Circle which she finds is a real rarity of a network.

“Penarth is so supportive, particularly during lockdown,” said Natalie.

“Cardiff is great but it’s a very transient clientele being a big city. Here we get regulars come in and you build a rapport with your customers, and there is a great business community.

“We are part of the Penarth Business Group which is really supportive and you do not always find that in other towns, so it’s great.”

Bar 44 tapas restaurant took over the old Clinton Cards on Windsor road back in December 2012.

For the owners, the love of Spanish food came from childhood trips to the continent. All three siblings have a cheffing and hospitality background and one day they decided to do it themselves.

Head chef at the site in Penarth Chris Biggs says it’s a great company to work for.

“It’s a great group of people, working with top-notch ingredients and all dishes are made in house,” said Chris.

You’ll notice the number 44 runs throughout the chain – why so? – it was the number of the first restaurant they opened in Cowbridge.

Sadly 44 High Street was a Covid casualty due to the fact the site could not accommodate two-metre distancing regulations.

However that hasn’t stopped 44 thriving and expanding, and Owen says it’s not going to stop now.

“Despite what is going on at the moment we are really looking to press on and continue to develop,” said Owen.

Well said Owen.
