A PETITION has been set up to save the Bears Head pub in Penarth after the bombshell news Wetherspoon’s activated a  break clause in the lease.

Pub goliath Wetherspoon’s confirmed with the Penarth Times on March 29 the Bears Head on Windsor Road will close.

Described as a “local treasure” a petition has been set up on change.org to try save the pub and it’s already got almost 400 signatures.

Set up by Nick Simmons, the petition comes with an emotional statement: “The Bears Head is more than just a pub to us. It has served the community of Penarth for many years and continues to be a much-loved establishment with affordable drinks, good quality food, and friendly locals.

“It is one of the beating hearts of Penarth and it would be tragic to see it go when it has been a staple for so many years here.

"However, this local treasure is now facing closure.

“This would not only mean losing a beloved gathering place but also losing an important part of our community's history and identity."

Wetherspoon’s confirmed with Penarth Times that they will be closing the Bears Head, but no date is set for when that closure will happen.

A spokesperson for Weatherspoon’s told Penarth Times: “The Bear’s Head in Penarth will close.

“Wetherspoon has served a break notice on the lease.

“There is no set date on when the pub will close and it will continue to operate as a Wetherspoon pub until its closure date.

“There will be no redundancies – all staff will be offered jobs at other Wetherspoon pubs.”
