A Vale of Glamorgan Council service has been given an award.

The council’s Family Information Service (FIS) has received the Families First Quality Award, a national accolade that acknowledges FIS teams that excel in providing advice and assistance to families.

The Vale team is the third in Wales to secure this recognition.

The assessment required the team to demonstrate success in 16 categories, including support offered to families with disabled children.

One of the strengths highlighted in the assessor's report was the FIS Index, a tool designed to support children and young people with additional needs and disabilities.

One parent who uses the service said: "I have two children with disabilities.

"I can access the Family Information Service using different media, which is good for me, as I have autism and disabilities as well.

"The FIS first helped me with information about how to get reasonable adjustments in school for my children, and I have since been able to access grants via the Index.

"They always follow-up after my calls to check if I still need help, which is great when you are neurodiverse.

"They advocate on my behalf and make me feel listened to and empowered."

The Vale's FIS was also commended for its community outreach work and partnership initiatives, notably its Christmas family party.

Councillor Eddie Williams, Vale of Glamorgan Council's cabinet member for social care and health said: "I’m delighted that the extraordinary work of the Family Information Service has been recognised with a national quality accreditation.

"The service plays an integral role in referring families and young people in the Vale towards advice and support, often transforming their health and wellbeing.

"This is evidenced in the glowing feedback from service users and partners."
