A PENARTH magistrate, who has been described as the ‘Queen Mum of the Bench’ by colleagues, retired this week after 38 years.

Mary Mossford, 70, is the second longest serving magistrate in England and Wales, and was honoured with a special celebration at Barry Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Mrs Mossford, who has also served as Ladies Captain at Glamorganshire Golf Club, first became a magistrate in 1972, aged 32.

Colleagues, friends and staff said she will be missed.

David Taylor, Chairman of the Bench, said: “Mary has always dispensed justice with considerable common sense.

“She’s done a wonderful job.”

Addressing the packed court, Mrs Mossford said: “This is a very emotional day for me.

“I’d like to thank all my friends, colleagues and staff. I shall miss you all terribly.”
