PENARTH Sea Cadets is facing closure, after 65 years of operating from their headquarters in Stanwell Cresent.
Cadet leader Trevor Harris says falling numbers and a lack of staff are to blame for the club’s demise, and has urged Penarthians to back the group.
He said: “Over the years, thousands of youngsters have trained and gained qualifications – ranging from seamanship, marine engineering, drumming, bugling, cook steward, meteorology, rifle drill, piping and physical training.
“All the activities are based on a naval tradition.
“Penarth Sea Cadets unit has represented the south Wales district at area and national level in a variety of different and demanding competitions, often with great success, and brought welcomed recognition to the town of Penarth.
“Many Penarth Sea Cadets have gone on to become prominent citizens in the town, having learnt discpline, gained confidence and developed leadership skills whilst being members - and have taken those skills and experiences into adulthood.
”Sadly, unless the people of Penarth support the unit it could be the end of an era,” added Mr Harris.
“After 65 proud years, Penarth Sea Cadets is fast reaching the end of the slipway. “That is why we are asking for help. “If there is anyone out there who has relevant experience or willing to learn who can spare one or two evenings a week, please contact us as soon as possible.”
