A CHARITY trek up a 2,285 metre-high mountain in Egypt has been postponed due to a lack of people taking part.
An intrepid team of fundraisers was due to leave the Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice in Penarth today, to climb to the summit of Mount Sinai to raise much needed funds for the charity.
But due to low participant numbers, the trek has been postponed until April 2010.
Although disappointed, the group have vowed to continue fundraising for the hospice before next year’s rescheduled challenge.
One of the trekkers, Liz Williamson, said: “It’s disappointing that we aren’t going to Egypt this week.
“I had been training hard and raising funds, so it’s a shame it’s been postponed.
“But I'm looking forward to next year and hope that some more people will sign up now to take part and make this a real experience – and that we can raise even more funds for the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth.”
The trek has been moved to April 9 to 14 in 2010, and will comprise of six days in Egypt, three of which will involve trekking. Team members will start out at 2.30am on the first day and climb to the summit of Mount Sinai for sunrise.
After descending back down to St Catherine, they will continue onwards through the Berber trails before camping beneath the stars. A spokeswoman for the Marie Curie Cancer Care Hospice in Penarth said: “Everyone is welcome on this trek, of all ages and backgrounds, but you must commit to raise a minimum of £2,300 in sponsorship which will go towards providing more nursing care for the hospice.
“This is a 30-bedded unit to nurse terminally ill cancer patients and their families completely free of charge.
"Seventy per cent of the income comes from donors and events such as this one and we are hoping to raise £50,000 from this trek alone.”
