A DRAMATIC light display will help celebrate Penarth Pier Pavilion’s 80th birthday this Saturday (December 5).

The Pavilion, which is the subject of a renovation project that last week won a £99,600 Heritage Lottery grant, was originally constructed in 1929.

Celebrations will kick off with a Washington Gallery reception at the Kymin from 6pm, while there is a festive tipple to be had from 6.30pm at Ffotogallery Turner House.

Then, dynamic light show ‘Ffosfforescence’ begins in the water surrounding the Pier from 8pm.

Commissioned by Ffotogallery and The Washington Gallery, ‘Ffosfforescence’ is the first work from Bread - a new collaboration between Bristol-based artists Ruth Essex and David Boultbee, which aims to use light to articulate hidden spaces and shadows of familiar public landmarks.

The display will be built with the help of volunteers from the local community and experts from Dorkbot Bristol, who will both assist in the construction and transport of glowing orbs through the town to the pier. If you fancy getting involved on the day between 12 noon and 5pm then email anne@ffotogallery.org to book a place on the orb-making workshop.

For those who just want to watch, you can view the display being assembled from 4pm. It will reach its climax at high tide, between 8pm and 9pm.
