VALE streets could face a midnight black-out under cost-cutting proposals being considered by the council.

The authority has identified a need to save up to £200,000 within its street lighting service as part of a range of cost-saving measures.

The council said it is also currently looking at options to reduce its street lighting energy consumption and its subsequent carbon emissions.

Vale Council street lighting manager, Bob Harris said: "The Council has already successfully introduced the use of dimming of street lighting and the installation of lower wattage LED and white light source lighting units.

"There are plans to install more dimmable units and energy-efficient lights in future years.

"Other options under consideration include modifying street lamps so that they switch off at midnight.

"No decisions have been taken at present with regard to which courses of action the authority will take, but we will endeavour to ensure that any inconvenience to the public is kept to a minimum."
