THE 2011 Men’s Open Singles Championship of Wales, held at Dinas Powis Bowling Club, ended with a fine win for local bowler Mike Ackland.

Spectators were treated to a week of high quality bowling culminating in an emphatic win for Mike against fellow Welsh International Dave Harding of the Penylan Club.

Sundays semi-finals were keenly contested with some high quality bowling from all concerned, not perhaps reflected in the scores which were: Mike Ackland 21, Tommy Cannon 12; and Dave Harding 21, Christian Aldridge 4.

The final was a feast of quality bowling with Dave taking the lead (4-0) after 3 ends. Mike drew level at 5 ends (4-4). At 10 ends Mike had stamped his authority on the game with two 3’s and a 2 against a 2 from Dave (13-6 to Mike). A 3 from Dave was followed by a 2 and a 3 from Mike to put him 18 shots to 9 up. Mike was not deterred by 3 consecutive singles from Dave (18-12 to Mike) and with a fine 3 on the 17th end Mike sealed the game and the Championship (21-12).

Mike's success is the culmination of a fine season for him, which saw him gain his first Outdoor International Cap for Wales in the Home International series held earlier in the summer.

Once again Dinas Powis Bowling Club has been proud and honoured to host the Men’s Open Championship and wish to thank the Tournament sponsors Spire Hospitals Cardiff and all the Patrons who give so generously every year - not forgetting the tournament organising committee and helpers, without whom the event could not take place.
