PENARTH Town Mayor Cllr Anthony Ernest and Mayoress Mrs Gaynor Ernest hosted a reception for officers and their wives from HMS Cambria, the only Royal Navy Reserve Unit in Wales.

Other guests were representatives of Penarth Sea Cadets, the Town Mayor’s Chaplain, the Deputy Town Mayor, the Leader of the Town Council and Leader of the Opposition.

The reception was an opportunity for the Mayor to thank HMS Cambria for the support its officers give to the town and to say goodbye to the Commanding Officer Simon Cottam, who is moving on from HMS Cambria to another posting.

During the reception the Mayor and Commander Cottam exchanged shields of their respective organisations.

Cllr Ernest said: "The officers and ships company of HMS Cambria have been extremely supportive of Penarth since they located to their present base, and have taken a leading role in activities and events the council has organised.

"We felt it appropriate to formally recognise this outstanding connection with Penarth, which has been to the mutual benefit of both the Royal Navy as well as the council.

"This is particularly relevant now that the reservists have an expanding role to play in the defence of the UK."
