Your correspondent Diane Wookey (“Penarth Times” October 15) was right to be concerned about the changes that are eroding the character of Penarth.

This is why we are focusing on the changes made in the last twenty years or so as a warning of destructive “modernisation”.

We are grateful for material received at our recent “open hour” at the Heritage Centre at South Lodge in Windsor Gardens showing a sympathetic new porch added in 2003 to a bungalow of 1936, very much in keeping with the original architecture.

This is not to decry examples of good modern architecture, some used in extensions to older buildings, which have given the town a lift.

The Heritage Centre will be open again on Saturday 31 October from 11am to 1pm to receive your photographs of new buildings, frontages or extensions that have changed the face of the town.

These should be identified on A4 sheets with or without any background information in preparation for storing in the archives. In this way we hope to show how the character of the town is rapidly changing from its Victorian origins.

In contrast, our beautifully preserved parks ensure we retain our image of “The Garden by the Sea”, while the new “Beachcliff” and the splendidly refurbished Pier Pavilion once again attract visitors to the Seafront.
