WITH reference to the article in the Penarth Times regarding parking problems at Penarth town centre, I have a suggestion that may be worth considering, and that is to move the main railway station at Station Approach to the old show rooms of Robert Smith (opposite the police station) opening up the rear of the building and constructing a new platform.
The inside of the building could be converted in to small retail units with secure parking for bicycle and charge points for electric cycles. This new Windsor Road main station has excellent connections with local bus services and a bridge over the main rail line.
By moving the main railway station and filling in the now disused rail cutting or covering over with a suspended concrete floor would free up a huge area for Park and Ride and provide extra parking spaces for shoppers. A cycle path could also be included to link up with the existing and resurfaced cycle path along Sully Terrace to Lavernock Road and the Cosmeston area. As there is now a planned development for 500 houses at the top end of Lavernock Road I think that this will also help to avoid traffic build up at peak times.
