IN the wake of International Women's Day, were you one of these women that played a very important role during the war years, in particular the part of Mobile Women?

This was a position not only held by single women but included married mothers, so long as they were under the age of 40 years.

This age group was extended and by 1943 it included the ages of 14 years to 64 years.

The latter were estimated to number in excess of 10 million who were eligible as not to be caring for children under 14 years of age.

There were numerous war worker agencies, which included Royal Ordnance factories, auxiliary workers in hospitals and the Ambulance Corps, the Women's Land Army and the Civil Defence.

Make no mistake these were important occupations, as they freed up a lot of healthy males between 18 and 41 years of age for conscription into the armed forces.

This also meant that females too could opt for forces recruitment.

So hats off to the ladies for doing their bit in the war effort!
